THE COMPETITION
From November 2018 to February 2019, youths across Nairobi competed to do the best, most creative and innovative transformation of a public open space of their choice using only locally available material.
Mentored by 32 Community Champions, more than 2000 youths registered, forming 114 teams, in 12 different areas of the city.
Using low cost methods, they worked hard to upgrade previously neglected public spaces into clean, green, safe and vibrant community places.

A jury formed of public space experts and enthusiasts evaluated the teams submissions to reward the best spaces. They were judged on three criteria : physical transformation, innovation, and management.

Their efforts were rewarded during a ceremony with 10 different awards, in the presence of representatives from UN-HABITAT and Nairobi City County.
​
After the award ceremony, teams keep improving their spaces and maintaining them, as result of identified income-generating activities on transformed spaces, creating job opportunities for youths from low income areas.
