History

Green Indoors

Public Space Network started as a small collective driven by the conviction that well-designed public spaces can transform cities. Today, our history is one of incremental change designing spaces that encourage gathering, inspire creativity, and build a more inclusive urban future.

June 2013

Robinson Esialimba connects on a personal level with 3 youths and supports the creation of Mustards Seeds Garden in Dandora.

January 2014

Phase 1 of transformation of Mustard Seeds Garden is completed and Robinson conceives the idea of the Changing Faces Competition (CFC) and establishes the Dandora Transformation League (DTL).

June 2014

First edition of the Changing Faces Competition is held with 5 participating teams from Dandora.

September 2015

Second edition of the Changing Faces Competition is held with more than 200 participating teams from Dandora. The idea of the Public Space Network (PSN) is born as the driver of the CFC to replace and succeed DTL as the appropriate vehicle to take the competition from Dandora to the rest of Nairobi.

September 2016

The third edition of CFC is launched but but this time for the whole of Nairobi with more than 500 teams and 6200 participating youth from across Nairobi under the auspices of PSN

May 2017

The Public Space Network is formally endorsed during a formal session of the Urban Thinkers Camp hosted by UN-habitat in Nairobi Kenya as forum to support increased access to quality public spaces in Kenya.

March 2018

Public Space Network is formally registered as a society.

May 2018

PSN wins the International Award for Best Practice in Public Space Management hosted by UN-Habitat and the Government of Dubai held in Dubai.

June 2018

PSN receives the Best Community Innovation Award in the Smart Cities Innovation Awards by Le Monde Magazine held in Singapore.

June 2018

PSN receives the Best Community Innovation Award in the Smart Cities Innovation Awards by Le Monde Magazine held in Singapore.

December 2021

PSN receives recognition by the Kenya Institute of Urban Planners (KIP) for Innovative Community Engagement during the Annual KIP Convention.

July 2025

PSN is registered in Switzerland as a non-profit organisation.
